Communication & Office Hours
Our office is available:
Monday–Thursday 9:00 AM–3:00 PM
During office hours, you may contact us by phone, Spruce secure messaging, or through your patient portal for scheduling assistance, prescription and referral coordination, medical records, laboratory and imaging coordination, troubleshooting, and other administrative needs.
Messages received during business hours are generally answered the same business day. Requests received after hours will generally be addressed the next business day.
Secure messaging is convenient for brief questions and care coordination but is not a substitute for a clinical appointment when evaluation, diagnosis, medication changes, or other treatment decisions are required.
For urgent or emergency medical concerns, please seek appropriate urgent or emergency medical care rather than relying on portal or text messaging.
Virtual Appointments
Balance Functional Medicine is a virtual practice.
Clinical appointments are generally scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, subject to provider availability.
Appointment requests and scheduling assistance are available during regular office hours, Monday–Thursday, 9:00 AM–3:00 PM, by phone or Spruce secure messaging. Appointment requests may also be submitted anytime through your patient portal.
You may request a 30- or 60-minute appointment, depending upon your needs and preference. Appointment availability may vary due to holidays, scheduled time away, and other changes in the clinical schedule.
Member Benefits
Discounted Laboratory Testing
Members have access to significantly discounted cash-pay pricing on many Quest laboratory tests. This can be especially helpful when a test is not covered by insurance, has a high deductible or copay, or when cash pricing is simply more economical.
When appropriate, we can help you consider both insurance and cash-pay options.
Insurance & Medicare Guidance
Balance Functional Medicine is a direct-pay practice, and Shirley Olson, NP-C has opted out of Medicare.
However, our experience with medical coding and insurance requirements allows us to help you navigate testing and outside services. When ordering laboratory testing, imaging, referrals, or other services, we can help identify potential insurance coverage and discuss alternatives when coverage may not be available.
Coverage ultimately depends upon your individual insurance plan and the policies of the outside provider or facility.
Fullscript Supplement Discount
20% discount
Balance Functional Medicine members receive a 20% discount on supplements ordered through our Fullscript dispensary.
We encourage you to compare pricing, including sales and promotions available from other reputable sources, so that you can choose the option that works best for you.
Clinical Services
Membership provides the ongoing administrative infrastructure and continuity of our practice. Clinical evaluation and treatment are provided through separately billed appointments.
Depending upon your individual needs and goals, services may include Functional Medicine, thyroid management, cognitive health and prevention, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, medical weight management, and other individualized approaches to health and wellness.
Functional Medicine
Functional Medicine looks beyond an isolated symptom or diagnosis to understand the factors that may be contributing to changes in your health.
Rather than applying the same treatment plan to everyone with a particular diagnosis, we begin with your individual story—your medical history, symptoms, medications, nutrition, lifestyle, environment, stressors, family history, and previous testing.
Understanding the Whole Picture
Our first goal is to understand how you arrived where you are today.
Symptoms rarely occur in isolation. Metabolic health, gastrointestinal function, hormones, thyroid function, inflammation, sleep, nutrition, stress, physical activity, medications, environmental exposures, and life circumstances can interact in important ways.
By looking at these relationships, we can identify areas that may deserve further investigation rather than simply addressing each symptom separately.
Personalized and Practical Care
Your plan may incorporate:
- Conventional and specialized laboratory testing
- Imaging or referrals when appropriate
- Nutrition and lifestyle strategies
- Exercise and movement
- Sleep and stress management
- Nutritional supplementation when indicated
- Prescription medication when appropriate
- Ongoing monitoring and adjustment based upon your response
Not every individual needs extensive specialty testing. Recommendations are tailored to your medical needs, personal goals, schedule, and financial considerations.
Our goal is to combine evidence-informed conventional and functional medicine approaches to develop a plan that is both comprehensive and realistic for your life.
Thyroid Management
Thyroid health can affect energy, metabolism, mood, cognition, body temperature, cardiovascular health, gastrointestinal function, weight, hair and skin, and overall well-being.
At Balance Functional Medicine, thyroid management begins with your symptoms and medical history rather than relying on a single laboratory value alone. When appropriate, evaluation may include a more comprehensive assessment of thyroid function, medications, nutritional factors, and other conditions that may influence thyroid health or contribute to persistent symptoms.
For individuals already receiving thyroid treatment, we provide ongoing monitoring and medication management. Treatment may include conventional thyroid replacement or other individualized options when clinically appropriate.
Our goal is to help you achieve appropriate thyroid function while carefully considering symptoms, laboratory findings, treatment response, and your overall health.
Cognitive Health & the Bredesen Approach
Balance Functional Medicine offers individualized approaches to cognitive health, risk reduction, and early cognitive change.
For individuals who want the structured Bredesen approach, we work with Apollo Health and the ReCODE program, which uses detailed health information and testing to identify factors that may contribute to cognitive decline and to develop individualized recommendations.
Apollo enrollment is not necessary for every patient. Some individuals choose the complete Apollo/ReCODE program, while others prefer to incorporate appropriate cognitive-health and prevention concepts into their individualized Functional Medicine care.
The approach can therefore be tailored to your goals, concerns, and desired level of participation.
Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)
Hormonal changes can affect many aspects of health and well-being. When appropriate, we evaluate symptoms, medical history, individual risk factors, and laboratory findings to determine whether hormone therapy should be considered.
Treatment is individualized rather than based on a single standardized protocol.
Depending upon individual needs, bio-identical hormone therapy may include:
- Topical preparations
- Transdermal patches
- Oral therapy when appropriate
- Injectable therapy when appropriate
Treatment includes appropriate clinical evaluation and ongoing monitoring, with therapy adjusted according to individual response, laboratory findings, benefits, and risks.
Medical Weight Management
Weight regulation is influenced by much more than willpower or calorie intake. Metabolic health, insulin resistance, hormones, thyroid function, sleep, medications, nutrition, physical activity, stress, gastrointestinal health, and other factors may all contribute.
Our medical weight-management approach combines individualized nutrition and lifestyle strategies with ongoing clinical monitoring.
When medically appropriate, treatment may also include GLP-1, GLP-1/GIP, or other evidence-based prescription medications as part of a broader treatment plan.
The goal is not simply short-term weight loss, but to identify and address factors affecting metabolic health while developing strategies that can realistically be maintained over time.
